Gypsies and Scones with Madelyn Hill

Today on my Appetizing April Blog, I’m featuring a brand spanking new book, and a delicious scone recipe. For the Love of a Gypsy released on April 17, 2015, and is Madelyn Hill’s third published book. It’s a historical romance, and, as the title implies, it’s about Gypsies. I for one am fascinated by Gypsies. Does this sound good so far? Keep reading!

How about a tempting recipe from the author? My mouth started watering while I read the ingredients below. I can’t wait to convince my husband to make these scones (yeah – I’m not the cook in my relationship):

Lemon Apricot Scones

scones3-500

• 2 cups all purpose flour

• 1/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons sugar

• 1 tablespoon baking powder

• 1/2 teaspoon salt

• 3/4 cup chopped dried apricots (about 4 1/2 ounces)

• 2 tablespoon grated lemon peel

• 1 1/4 cups whipping cream

• 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted

Preheat oven to 425°F

Mix 2 cups flour, 1/4 cup sugar, 1 tablespoon baking powder and 1/2 teaspoon salt in large bowl. Stir in apricots and 1 tablespoon lemon peel. Add whipping cream and stir just until dough forms. Turn dough out onto lightly floured surface.

Knead gently just until dough holds together. Form dough into 10-inch-diameter, 1/2-inch-thick round. Cut into 12 wedges.

Transfer wedges to large, parchment-lined baking sheet, spacing evenly. Combine remaining 2 tablespoons sugar and 1 tablespoon lemon peel in small bowl. Brush scones with melted butter. Sprinkle with sugar mixture. Bake scones until light golden brown, about 15 minutes. Transfer to rack and cool slightly. (Can be prepared 1 day ahead. Cool completely. Wrap in foil; store at room temperature.) Serve scones warm or at room temperature. Recipe Adapted from Epicurious.com (Bon Appetit) 1998

Get to know the author who created both the above book and delicious scones:

Madelyn Hill has always loved the written word. From the time she could Madelyn Promo-Photoread and all through her school years, she’d sneak books into her textbooks during school. And she devoured books daily. At the age of 10 she proclaimed she wanted to be a writer. After being a “closet” writer for several years, she sent her manuscripts out there and is now published with Soul Mate Publishing. And she couldn’t be happier! A resident of Western New York, she moved from one Rochester to another Rochester to be with the love of her life. They now have 3 children and keep busy cooking, watching their children’s sporting events, and of course reading!

Appetizing April? Tanner Lyons Is Taking Over Anyway

Here’s the deal: My name is Tanner Lyons, and I’m the hero (which feels awkward to say, by the way) of the first Lightbearer book, Into the Light. The reason I’m taking over my author’s blog is because my book is featured on this thing called Book Bub today, and is crazy-ass discounted at 99 cents for the next few days. Tami made it clear that I’m supposed to talk about food, because apparently her blog is sub-titled Appetizing April this month, and every post is supposed to tie into food or eating.

Okay, so here’s my talk about food: I like to eat it. Preferably meat, although I’ll be honest and tell you that the head chef in the Lightbearer’ s coterie does make some pretty mean vegetable dishes. Still, I’d choose a hefty rare steak over pretty much anything else in the world.

Into the LightGot it? Good. Now that we’ve appeased my author, let’s get something straight: She is not practically giving my book away because she thinks I am worth less than Finn Hennigan, who is featured in the second book, Dawning of Light, or his brother Reid, who is featured in the third book, Light Beyond the Darkness, which is coming out on April 27. The truth is, you’re gonna love my story so much that you’re gonna feel the need to read their stories too. That’s why mine is discounted. Because I’m the pack master, after all.

Shit, I really am a pack master now, aren’t I? I’ve been avoiding this trap for ten years. dawningoflight_CoverThen some hot little Lightbearer who looks like she could never hold her own, yet is stronger than you and me and your entire family put together, comes along and flings my freaking plans over the nearest cliff. (And yes, that was a reference to the cliff in the Lightbearers’ coterie – and there is a point in the story when I want to throw myself over that damn cliff. Except I’m a shifter, so I would just instinctively shift into the shape of a bird and fly instead of crash into the beach at the bottom.)

Olivia Bennett. She’s the princess of the Lightbearers, the only offspring of the king and queen. Oh, did I forget to mention that I didn’t even believe these magical beings existed, until I saw Olivia curled up in the far corner of a prison cell in the basement of my asshole father’s mansion? Yeah, you read that right. My father, the pack master of the largest pack of shifters on the continent, built a freaking prison into the basement of his ridiculously pretentious mansion home. That’s how much of a bastard he is. No, wait, it gets better.

He believes that to kill a Lightbearer is to inherit her magic. Yep. My kind can shift from human form into pretty much any warm-blooded animal form that exists, so therefore we are part of the magical community. But that is the only magic we possess, and that just isn’t good enough for my psycho old man. (Are you sensing a theme here? I really hate the guy. With good reason, I promise.) Quentin Lyons wants the combined magic of shifters and Lightbearers, like that’s going to make him all powerful or some shit. Make him a god, I guess. The man’s seriously fucked up in the head.

LightBeyondDarkness_CoverAs I am his only legitimate offspring, that means I probably am – or will be, eventually – fucked up as well. Which means the last thing in this world I should be doing is rescuing some hapless Lightbearer and helping her get back to her secret, warded home, where all the rest of the Lightbearers live in blissful safety. Because you know what’s going to happen if Olivia and I spend too much time together, right?

I am in so much freaking trouble.

Matrimonial March Snippets

Let’s wrap up Matrimonial March with a rundown of the books I’ve published that are connected somehow with weddings. I’m sure it will come as no surprise that there are a few of them. Let’s get started…

The Bartender Nook 150The Bartender is my very first self-published book. It follows Julia Lee’s life, from her freshman year in college until the year she turns twenty-five, and includes the ups and downs of finding and losing love – and then finding it again. Several wedding scenes are featured in this book – Julia’s best friend’s wedding, a proposal gone wrong, and ultimately, Julie’s own happily ever after, which ends with her own wedding. It’s a sweet yet angsty read, with a surprising twist toward the end, and it’s only 99 cents. Click on the book cover if you want more!

The Resort IV - Valentine's Day at the Resort

Valentine’s Day at The Resort is the fourth in The Resort series, and is all about weddings. Allison’s on again, off again boyfriend, Carter James, has been spending far too much time with the wedding planner who has taken over The Resort in preparation for the upcoming Valentine’s Day wedding, and Allison is determined to figure out why. As usual in this series, she gets caught up in something much bigger than she can handle alone, so she drags the usual players – Carter, the sexy police detective, Dan, her best friend, Bree – into her problems. And this time, the spunky, determined bride helps her solve this mystery as well. This is one bride who isn’t going to let anyone ruin her big day. The Resort series is full of wacky hi-jinxes and hot ‘n’ spicy scenes. While Valentine’s Day at The Resort is a perfect Matrimonial March read, the entire series is worth a few Saturday afternoons curled up on the couch with your e-reader!

Naked Truthsmall

Naked Truth opens at a wedding. Kennedy is a bridesmaid in her cousin Sabrina’s wedding. Sabrina is marrying Cullen, an FBI agent whose partner happens to be super hot playboy, Jack Boudreaux. During the reception, Jack and Kennedy make use of the limo that’s waiting to take the wedding party back to the hotel at the end of the evening. Once Kennedy gets a taste of what Jack offers, she can’t say no to him, even when their affair puts her life in danger. Besides a spicy wedding scene, this book contains a crazed killer and exotic dancers. Male exotic dancers. Yep, you read that right! Click the cover to start reading today.

PerfectChristmas-A

The Perfect Christmas is part of a Christmas anthology called Unwrapping Love. While the story itself doesn’t include a wedding, a few months ago, I offered the epilogue here on my blog – which happens to be a scene from a wedding! If you haven’t read it, you can do so here. If you haven’t read the anthology, click the cover for more details. It’s over 700 pages of holiday love!

fashion man and woman standing back to back

Separation Anxiety is a free read available only on my website (click the cover to download). It’s not about weddings, exactly, but it is about divorce – specifically one couple’s attempt to avoid it. It’s a sweet and spicy short story that won’t take long to read, but will leave you with a smile on your face!

As you can see, weddings often come into play in my books. Partially, of course, that’s because I write happily ever afters, and, well, weddings are a natural part of that concept. It’s also because I worked in the wedding industry in my past life, and it’s easy to write what you know. And finally, I write about weddings because, well, there’s usually plenty of fodder to work with! Weddings are such a large production, the planning usually spans several months, so there’s bound to be something that happens that makes it worth opening the laptop and putting fingers to keys. Hey, I figure we’re all winners when that happens!

Well, this is the end of Matrimonial March on my blog. I hope you’ve enjoyed the various wedding-themed posts. Maybe you’ve even found a new book or a new author to love? Next up is Appetizing April. A whole slew of new blog posts, and they’re all about food. Because who doesn’t love food???

***COVER REVEAL***

Yep, it’s Matrimonial March, and here I am, deviating from my own theme, so I can reveal the cover of my latest book. But I’m not really deviating (work with me here!). Light Beyond the Darkness is about a woman who was mated to the wrong man. So wrong, in fact, that he tried to kill her. When he didn’t succeed, she ran away to avoid, you know, the chance he might try again – and manage to get it right the next time. When she meets a new man and thinks she might have finally found her happily ever after, she runs into a snag.

In the third installment of the Lightbearer series, lightbearer Carley Santiago and shifter Reid Hennigan are running from their pasts. Hiding in the human world, they meet and sparks fly. But what happens when Carley’s past threatens to ruin her relationship with Reid?

Carley was once the premier chef for kings – the King of the Lightbearers, that is. But when her mate pushes her over a cliff and she miraculously survives, she flees her home, the coterie, knowing he will want to finish the job. She figures hiding in the human world is the best way to ensure her own safety.

While working as a chef at one of Chicago’s top restaurants, she meets Reid Hennigan, a lone shifter running from his own past. Carley tries to push him away – she wants nothing to do with anyone from the magical community – even a persistent shifter who insists he only wants to show her pleasure.

Reid Hennigan is another reject from Quentin Lyons’ defunct pack. When he received word his pack master was dead, Reid ran away from his pack, from pack life, having no interest in being forced to be subservient to another abusive pack master. Unfortunately for Reid, shifters are hardwired to desire to be part of a pack, and he finds himself wandering aimlessly through life, with no clear idea of what to do next. When he stumbles upon the shy lightbearer while eating the best steak of his life, he discovers a new lease on life.

Reid sets out to woo the beautiful, broken lightbearer. Passion turns to love, and Reid figures his life is pretty damn perfect, despite no longer having a pack. But Carley has secrets of her own, and her secrets could be fatal – to both of them!

excerpt

“He sent it back?” Carley asked in disbelief.

Sara nodded. “He said he can tell you didn’t make it, and he refuses to eat anything from this kitchen that does not come specifically from you. He suggested you could come out and talk to him about it.”

Carley shook her head and rolled her eyes. She would just bet he was open to her going out into the dining room to talk to him.

“Tell him I’m not making steaks tonight. Tell him I’m focusing on the vegetarian dishes,” she said suddenly. She grinned when Sara walked away. That ought to teach him.

The waitress returned a moment later. “He wants the vegetarian special,” she said. “And the key lime pie.” She tilted her head and gave Carley a quizzical look. “What’s going on with you and that guy? I thought you said you didn’t know him?”

“I don’t,” Carley insisted. “I know…someone close to him,” she said. She knew Tanner and his mother, Ariana, Finn, and Lisa, the shifters who were currently living in what had once been Carley’s home, the lightbearers’ coterie. Whether this shifter knew them or not, she had no idea. But they were the same species. That meant he was closer to them than any other species, right?

She washed her hands and nudged Eric away from the vegetable station. “He wants our vegetarian special? I’ll make him a vegetarian special,” she announced, and she set to work chopping every damn type of vegetable she could find.

When Sara returned with the empty plate from the shifter’s table, she held it up for Carley’s inspection and said, “He wants to speak to you. He said he’ll summon the manager if you don’t go out there.”

Carley’s heart sank. The manager would undoubtedly force the issue, if it was brought to his attention. He saw no reason why his chef wouldn’t want to go out into the dining room and schmooze customers.

“Fine,” she grumbled as she sliced a wedge from one of the key lime pies she had made earlier in the day. She deliberately dropped it onto its side on the plate and didn’t add garnish before shoving a few strands of hair behind her ear and stomping out of the kitchen.

“Here,” she said as she unceremoniously dropped the plate onto the table.

The shifter gave the sloppy slice of pie a cursory glance before lifting his pale blue eyes and focusing so wholly onto Carley that she was certain he saw absolutely nothing else in the room at the moment. How could someone be that focused? She didn’t think she’d ever had anyone pay her such full attention in her life.

She fidgeted, nervously twisting her hands together before she realized what she was doing and clasped them behind her back. The shifter continued to stare at her.

“You owe me for that one, Carley.”

She visibly jerked at the sound of his voice, low and deep and smooth as whiskey.

“For what?” she asked, wondering how in the world he knew her name and for what she could possibly owe him. As far as she knew, she’d never met the man before yesterday.

“That dinner. As enticing as it was eating something with your magical stamp on it, forcing me to eat vegetables does not put me in a particularly good mood.”

She blinked owlishly. “I didn’t force you to eat vegetables.”

“You refused to make me a steak.”

“Sean’s steaks are practically as good as mine,” she protested.

“‘Practically’ isn’t yours.”

With a great deal of effort, she pulled her gaze away from his and made a swift perusal around the restaurant. All human, and none were paying them any particular attention, other than the ones she knew were listening at the door behind her.

“Do I know you?” she asked.

“Not yet,” he replied.

She frowned. “What is that supposed to mean?”

His voice pitched low. “It means I intend to get to know you, every inch of you, from the inside out. I intend to possess you. I intend to do things—” He reached for her, and she pulled away as if he was about to hit her. He froze, mid-reach and mid-sentence. And then he slowly lowered his hand.

“You’ve been abused,” he stated, matter-of-factly.

She shook her head, trying to deny it. Don’t go there. Don’t go there.

“Past lover?”

She shook her head again. How had the conversation turned to this?

“Family member then.”

“No,” she finally managed to get out.

“Who?”

“Stop,” she said as she lifted her hand, palm facing out. “Just stop. This is none of your business. I don’t know you. I don’t even know your name, and I have no idea how you know mine. I—” He cut her off.

“My name is Reid. And one of your employees referred to you by name yesterday, when I went into the kitchen to meet you.”

“Fine. Fine. Reid. Look, Reid, obviously you know what I am, and I know what you are. So can we just be honest with each other? What do you want from me?”

“I was in the middle of telling you when you flinched away as if you expected I would hit you.”

Carley blew out a breath. Damned instincts. But it was hard to change the only way she knew how to interact with men.

“I don’t know how you found me, but—”

“It was purely by accident.”

She drew in a ragged breath. “Fine. By accident. Whatever. Look, I’m trying to establish a nice, normal life here. One that doesn’t involve shifters or lightbearers or anyone else from the magical community for that matter. That means there isn’t any room in that nice, normal life for you. So the best thing for you to do is just finish up that key lime pie and go back to whatever pack you came from, okay?”

“I can’t go back,” he replied. “And it isn’t acceptable that you have no room in your life for me.”

Was he serious? She stared at him. He certainly looked serious. If he was joking, he was doing a damn fine job of acting deadpan. Too fine a job.

“I don’t understand,” she finally said.

“Which part?”

She flapped her hand. “All of it. What do you mean, it isn’t acceptable? Since when do you have any say in my life?”

“Since I entered it and decided I want you.”

She stared again, her jaw falling open. “You want—”

“You.”

“Me?”

“Clearly it isn’t for your quick wit.”

She snapped her mouth shut and stabbed her finger at the restaurant entrance. “Get out of my restaurant. You can’t have me. Get out. Now.” She didn’t wait to see if he complied. She turned and stalked back into the kitchen with her head held stiffly, refusing to turn around and look at him again. She didn’t need to, to know he was watching her. Lights above, she could feel the intensity of his stare without having to look.

Just as soon as the kitchen door swung shut behind her, she leaned against the wall and took great, gasping breaths. Her entire body shook as if she was in shock. Hell, she probably was.

Someone thrust a glass into her hand. The stench of bourbon assaulted her nose.

“Drink,” Vivian commanded. Carley obediently drank, and then sputtered and gasped when the amber liquid slid down her throat.

“What did he do to you?” Vivian demanded, clearly having decided she was coherent enough to speak of the incident.

“Nothing,” Carley said.

“Well, what happened, then? You’re shaking like a leaf. Something scared the crap out of you. What was it?”

Carley shook her head, but Vivian was a tenacious human being. Finally, Carley admitted, “I’ve never stood up to a man like that before.”

Vivian looked at her as if she’d just sprouted an alien head. Carley shook her head again.

“My father—he wasn’t exactly the most loving parent. And I ended up in a really bad relationship,” she said, conscious of the fact that she’d never spoken of this to anyone, not since the day she left the coterie, five months ago. “I never had the option to say no.” She smiled, just a little. “It sort of felt good.”

“Hell yeah, it did,” Vivian said fiercely. But then she frowned. “Problem with those types, though, is that they generally see someone like you as a challenge.”

“What does that mean?” Carley asked in alarm.

“It means that I doubt this is the last we’ve seen of Mr. Rare Steak.”

Meet the Author

Tami Lund Headshot 2014

Tami Lund likes to live, love, and laugh, and does her best to ensure the characters in her books do the same. After they’ve overcome a few seemingly insurmountable obstacles first, of course.

When she’s not doing that, she’s a mom to two (growing far too fast) kids and a furbaby who conveniently forces her to exercise at least once a day. She’s also a wife to her own knight in shining armor who proposed in a way worthy of a romance novel.

Most of all, she loves to write. She figures it keeps her from going insane. Or at the very least, it keeps strangers from believing she is insane, because if she goes too long without writing the characters down on the computer, she tends to start talking to them. Out loud. Often, in public places.

Tami is multi-published, both self and with a few publishers, including Crimson Romance, Liquid Silver Books, and, (as of June 2015) Soul Mates Publishing.

Chances are, there is a new book coming out soon. Be sure to stalk her on social media, so you know when. And most important, if you enjoyed one of Tami’s books, please let other readers know by leaving a review on the site from which you bought it, or on Goodreads. Otherwise, how will they know which book to read next?

The Wedding Cake – What Could Go Wrong?

As we continue Matrimonial March on my blog, I have the pleasure of featuring a fellow author who also used to work in the wedding planning industry. These days, Jennifer Ray uses that knowledge to create lovely backdrops for wonderful books, including the short story, Declan’s Special, which is part of the Unwrapping Love Anthology. Jennifer is here today to talk about one of the single most important aspects of every wedding: the cake.

~~~
Thank you, Tami, for having me here today. This month is Matrimonial March on Tami’s blog so, today, I’m going to talk about cake. Because it’s cake. Besides the alcohol, cake is probably the best part of a wedding.
In a former life, I owned a bakery. I made more cakes then I can count, and many of them were wedding cakes and groom’s cakes.
Grooms Cake Wedding Cake
But I’m not going to talk about flavors, fondant, fillings, tiers, or cake flowers. I’m going to tell you a story. A story about a baker’s worse nightmare, and thankfully, nothing that ever happened to me.
Wedding Day Nightmare
Amy pulled up to the front of the antebellum home. The 200 year old white columns were identical to the columns which held the top tier of her masterpiece. “Perfect,” she released on a breath.
“What was that?” Sara, Amy’s helper, walked around the other side of the van carrying the small box which contained the tier.
“Nothing. Let’s get this cake set up. I need a nap!” Amy smiled at Sara’s chuckle and slid open the van’s door. She grabbed the large bottom tier box and started for the home’s double doors.
The cake table was at the back of the home in a large, windowed room which was as wide as the entire house and probably half as deep. A large chandelier hanging from the center sparkled and lit up the room. Four smaller chandeliers in the room’s corners complimented the large one. The cake table’s corner twinkled the brightest to accent the cake’s own glittery adornments.
“Beautiful.” Sara twirled looking at the wedding décor.
Amy walked over to the table and placed the large box on the floor. She opened it wide and lifted out the bottom tier, placing it on the center of the silver cake stand. The table wobbled a bit with Amy’s weight leaning on the edge. “Woah!”
Sara gave the table a jiggle, but it appeared to be stable. “We’re good. I’ll go get the next tier.”
Amy rotated the cake to find its nicest side and then centered it.
“Here’s the next tier. Do you need help with this one?” Sara sat the box down and opened the lid.
“No. The next two are too tall to maneuver, but I’m fine for now.” Amy leaned in and picked up the tier. She rotated it in her hands until she found the small mark she made at the bakery designating its front side. She carefully centered it a half inch above the bottom tier. Once confident of its placement, she let it drop down in place while removing her hands. She circled the table checking the alignment of the two tiers. “Perfect.” She turned to find Sara carrying in the next tier and two folded step stools.
Amy opened up the stools and set them up against the table. With Sara’s help, she placed the next tier, added the white columns to the top of it, and snapped the top tier in position.
After climbing down, Amy admired their work. “Looks great. Let’s add the flowers.”
Sara nodded and handed her the sugar flowers as quickly as Amy could arrange them. With the last flower in place, Sara grabbed the camera and snapped pictures. Amy slowly walked around the table double checking everything. She smiled as she circled back to the front.
“It’s beautiful,” Sara said.
“Thank you.” Amy grinned and leaned down to clean up the boxes.
After gathering everything up, Amy grabbed the camera for a few more shots. A soft cracking sound barely tickled her ears. She paused and looked around trying to identify the noise. She looked to her left when movement from the corner of her eye drew her attention. The table top dipped forward and the cake stand slid off, bringing the cake with it. The remains of the top tier landed at Amy’s feet, but all that met her eyes was black.
Hope you enjoyed the story. If you’re planning a wedding, cut your baker some slack on the wedding day because they’re more than likely a little worried about getting the job down without any problems!
The Wedding Planner
wedding clip art
Welcome to the first blog post of Matrimonial March. In case you missed yesterday’s post, for the rest of the year, each month my blog features a specific theme. Every post will tie into said theme. This month, the first month of this themed idea, is all about weddings. Some of my guest bloggers will talk about their own weddings – or wedding planning. Some will talk about weddings from books they’ve written. Some might talk about divorce. The topics will be diverse, but all about weddings.
Including this one.
Once upon a time, I was a wedding planner. Yep. I was an event planner for 12 years, and 4 of those were dedicated almost exclusively to planning weddings. I worked for this gorgeous historic home that had been converted into a museum. We raised funds and maintained the museum by holding events there, specifically weddings. This historic home was located on a prime piece of real estate, nestled between a golf course and a copse of trees. It was located in the suburbs of Detroit, far enough out to not feel urban, not too far so as to potentially lose business.
Wedding planning is a ridiculously stressful career. It also comes with great payoffs – when (almost) everything goes smoothly and the bride and her mother (let’s face it – these are the people you have to impress when it comes to planning a wedding) are both happy. I have so many stories, both positive and not so much.
The venue where I worked was not large enough to seat more than 120 people for dinner, and if they wanted dancing too ( who doesn’t?), we had to literally clear, break down, and roll away tables to make it happen. Therefore, during the milder months, we erected a large tent, overlooking the golf course, where we could comfortably seat 300 for dinner, along with a lovely dance floor and plenty of room for either a DJ or band. To get from the house to the tent, you had to cross approximately twenty feet of lawn. No problem on a lovely, clear, summer eve. Not so much fun during a thunderstorm.
I spent a large portion of my wedding planning career agonizing over the weather. I knew The Weather Channel better than the stodgiest grandpa did. I was obsessed. My family teased me that I was old beyond my years. Really, I was just worried about whether or not my bride would hate her wedding day. Out of our control or not, the weather matters on one’s wedding day. Especially if your wedding is supposed to be outside.
I have as many happy memories as I do frustrating ones of those years of my life. And I’ve put those memories to good use. I can’t even tell you how many manuscripts on my computer feature either a wedding or a wedding planner. The ones I’ve published so far include:
The Bartender NookThe Resort IV - Valentine's Day at the ResortNaked Truthsmall
Usually the wedding planner is the good guy (hey, that was me, remember?). Sometimes, though, I like to shake things up. The fourth book in The Resort series, Valentine’s Day at The Resort, is about a wedding planner. Except she isn’t one of the good guys. In fact, she’s a very, very bad person.
Which was really fun to write, frankly.
Allison Bell, the main character in The Resort series, calls her best friend, Bree, and inquires about the wedding planner that has taken up residence at The Resort, where both Bree and Carter, Allison’s on again/off again boyfriend work. This is their conversation:
“The wedding planner for my Valentine’s Day wedding has a gorgeous assistant, and much to my surprise, he’s not gay. Not in the least.” She sounded positively giddy.
“Speaking of the wedding planner, Carter doesn’t sound too pleased with her. What do you think?”
Bree hesitated, then burst out, “I hate her. I can’t believe this woman is a wedding planner. She treats us all like servants. All of us – except Carter.”
“Except Carter?” Out of nowhere, warning bells started clanging in my head.
I could almost see Bree nodding vigorously. “She fawns over him, worships him, follows him around everywhere. It’s way over the top.”
“He didn’t mention that she fawns over him.”
Bree went on for another five minutes about the woman’s fawning.
“Is she pretty?” Please tell me she wasn’t. Please tell me she looked like a bloated cow or a rhinoceros or anything but pretty…
“She has the largest boobs I’ve ever seen.”
Naturally, Allison hurries over to The Resort to have a look for herself. Here is her conversation with Carter, after she’s seen the woman for the first time:
“I just got my first glimpse of the wedding planner,” I said breathlessly.
Carter’s hand stilled, and then he slowly pulled it out from underneath my skirt. He leaned his head back to look down into my face. Since I was a solid foot shorter than him, and the rest of his body was still molded to mine, he had to lean way back.
“Did you meet her?”
“No. Just watched her on the screen. Nice rack.”
Carter stepped away from me and dropped into the single chair in the room. He ran his hands through his hair in a rare agitated motion. “Allison, this is nothing at all for you to worry about.”
I arched one eyebrow in an impressive imitation of him. “The fact that you start this conversation with, ‘this is nothing for you to worry about’ worries me more than anything else.”
He leaned forward, grabbed my hands and tugged me closer, so that I stood directly in front of him. “Please don’t get bent out of shape about her. She is a bitch and I am not remotely attracted to her. She’ll be gone in ten days and our lives can go back to normal.”
“Why do you think I’m worried that you might be attracted to her?” I asked, curious to know his answer, even though I was worried that he was attracted to her. Who wouldn’t be?
He looked up at me. “Are you going to get pissed if I point out that she is obviously attractive?”
“Probably. I was sort of hoping you hadn’t noticed.”
Bree is the marketing manager for The Resort, which unfortunately means she has the job of ensuring both the bride-to-be and the wedding planner are happy. Here’s an excerpt from a conversation between Allison and Bree, regarding an email Bree received from the bride:
“Check this out. It’s an email from my bride. It’s about three pages worth of things she needs me to take care of before the wedding.” She looked up at me. “Isn’t this what a wedding planner is supposed to do? Why is she emailing all these requests to me?”
I didn’t know much about weddings, and even less about wedding planners, but I agreed with Bree. I looked back at the email.
“‘Contact florist and find out what time they will deliver flowers. Contact bakery and arrange cake delivery. Cake and florist’s deliveries must coincide because florist will need to decorate cake. Bride’s parents will bring favors with them. Favors are a bottle of wine from the family’s winery. Favors will need to be set out at every other place setting. Bride will provide place cards. Place cards will need to be set out, alphabetically, on a table in the foyer,’” I read down the list.
“This is weird, Bree. I saw J-Lo’s movie. This is the stuff wedding planners are supposed to do. Do you have Clarissa’s [the wedding planner] email address? You should just forward this to her.”
“It gets better,” Bree said, and she hit the page down button a couple times. Then she pointed at the computer screen and read, “‘I’ve contacted my wedding planner concerning these items and she indicated you would be happy to handle them for her, since she is so overwhelmed with ensuring The Resort is perfectly safe for our friends and family.’ What the hell?”
We looked at each other blankly. What the hell indeed?
And it goes on and on. The wedding planner has a ridiculously hot assistant with whom Bree starts an affair, but he wants Allison, which causes a bit of tension. Not to mention the wedding planner’s obsession with Allison’s boyfriend, and his refusal to put her in her place. Oh yeah, and there are strange things happening at The Resort, and the wedding planner has an unnatural interest in the building’s security system. Allison and Bree, along with the bride-to-be, in clumsy, klutzy amateur sleuth fashion, decide to take it upon themselves to figure out what’s really going on, because one thing is certain: That wedding planner doesn’t seem to do much in the way of actual wedding planning.
When I wrote this book, I pulled from my experience as a wedding planner – and a bride – as well as my experience working in hotels and restaurants. Hopefully that makes for a fun and sexy read!
Since I’ve spent so much time talking about Valentine’s Day at The Resort, maybe I should give you info as to where you can purchase it. BOOK REVIEWS: Tami’s Recent Reads & Recommendations
I’ve read a few pretty spectacular books lately, so I figured I’d share, in case you need some fresh reading ideas. Enjoy!
Jump, Jive, and Wail
Jump, Jive, and Wail by Kathryn R. Biel
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Every time I read women’s fiction, I wonder why I don’t read it more often. Including this time. I thoroughly enjoyed this read, largely for two reasons: the hero and the heroine. The interactions between them were funny, sweet, adorable, romantic… you name it.
Declan was that one of a kind hero who isn’t a bad boy, isn’t an alpha, has a wicked sense of humor, is confident (he has to be, to be a figure skater who happens to not be gay), caring, sweet, and frankly, exactly the kind of guy I want my daughter to marry someday.
Kaitlyn is the broken heroine. In the beginning of the book, she hates herself, hates life, hates everything. A chance encounter with Declan, a delayed flight due to weather, and over the course of 12 hours, Declan manages to convince her that she shouldn’t be so down on herself, that it was time for her to pull her life together. Did I mention I adore Declan? Because trust me, Kaitlyn’s issues were plenty big enough that she had every right to wallow in a little anger and frustration.
These two spark right away, but life and circumstances get in the way, causing them to develop first a friendship, before finally giving in to what the reader is going to root for from page one. Trust me, you will enjoy this read. It’s worth adding to your TBR. Excellent job, Kathryn Biel!
Love and Libations (Holidays and Heroes, #2)Love and Libations by Patricia D. Eddy
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
SUCH a wonderful book. So emotional, so true, so realistic. I have no experience with the sort of abuse the heroine endears, so if that character in this type of book is not written well, I tend to be annoyed by her refusal to change her “lot in life.” That was not the case with this book. I sympathized with both main characters, and not once did I yell at the heroine (in my head) or want to throw my Kindle at the wall. All I wanted was for both Lilah and Garrett to find their happily ever – together.
This is an emotional read about two individuals who have a great deal to overcome before they can truly be happy. You will enjoy the journey, all the way to the end, and this will be one of those books you will not want to leave when you reach that last page. Well done, Patricia Eddy.
The Stand InThe Stand In by Rosanna Leo
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Such a fun read. Patrick and Winn have the right amount of chemistry to keep the pages turning, and turning, and turning. The situations they fall into are so funny, and they are so endearing… and so hot! It really is a solid, warm-fuzzy read, with the perfect sprinkling of spice.
I admit, I’m a sucker for a handsome, confident guy with a great sense of humor. Like Patrick. He’s the perfect book boyfriend, and I’m so glad he and Winn hook up, because they both deserve the happily ever after that Rosanna Leo gives them.
And one final note: the ending is just so darn cute! Highly recommend this read. You will not be disappointed.
View all my reviews
FuelFuel by Ashlynn Pearce
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
This was the first book I’ve read by Ashlynn Pearce, and I can’t wait to read more! Plenty of angst and frustration to keep the reader turning pages, wanting to know what will happen next. Cassie is the headstrong and determined heroine who has come from an abusive background and just wants to escape and start her life over. Thrand (I love that name!) was her deceased brother’s best friend, until he escaped their small, backwoods town. Unbeknownst to him, Cassie had a crush on him when they were younger.
Their accidental meeting in Nashville, when neither knew the other was in town, works, if you know Nashville at all. It’s a big city and yet a small town and it’s entirely possible to bump into an old friend on the street.
The rest of the book centers around both characters growing- individually as well as together. We also get to watch as the band, Dirtslap, comes together. Oh, and the author gives us a taste of book two, as well, and I’m now eagerly awaiting the next happily ever after in the series. Well done, Ashlynn!
What’s it about?
They were supposed to be enemies, not lovers. Tanner Lyons is a shifter without a pack, which is just the way he likes it—until he rescues Olivia Bennett, princess of the Lightbearers. Suddenly, he finds himself fighting an attraction that makes no sense, because Lightbearers and shifters have been mortal enemies since the beginning of time. Intrigue, adventure, magic, and passion – you’ll find it all in Into the Light, Book 1 of Tami Lund’s exciting new fantasy series, Lightbearers.
Shifters dominate the human world, while Lightbearers stay hidden away in their magically protected coterie. That is, until Olivia Bennett, princess of the Lightbearers, is captured by the most powerful shifter of them all—Quentin Lyons, who believes that to kill a Lightbearer is to inherit her magic.
His son, Tanner, doesn’t believe his father’s theory. In the ultimate betrayal, Tanner rescues Olivia and vows to return her to her home. Along the way, he discovers two other Lightbearers who have left the safety of the coterie, not to mention an attraction to the Lightbearer princess that becomes increasingly more difficult to ignore with each hour he spends in her company.
The attraction makes no sense. Lightbearers and shifters have been mortal enemies since the dawn of time. He’s supposed to feel the urge to kill her, not … well, you know.
Despite shifters who are out to kill them and Lightbearers who don’t trust them, Tanner and Olivia decide to take the chance and give in to their mutual attraction, only to discover that Olivia’s destiny has been predetermined, and it doesn’t include her shifter lover. They must decide if they are willing to risk it all, or if they can walk away from true love for the sake of the Lightbearer species.
