It’s A Party At Versailles!

Today, I have a special guest on my blog. His name is Jack Sharpe, and he’s the adorable hero from The Long Way Home, Jessica Cale’s most recent release from the Southwark Saga. Jack and Alice’s story was released on Monday. If you like amusing, adorable romance, if you like historical romance, if you like romance at all, you will love this book. It’s fun, it’s dangerous, it’s compelling… Can you tell I like this book? A large part of the reason I like it so is because of Jack. He’s such a perfect hero. Don’t believe me? Here, check out his interview…

Jessica Cale, The Long Way Home. Interview with hero, Jack Sharpe

What’s your favorite restaurant? The Rose & Crown in Southwark. There’s something comforting about going down to the local for a pint and pie. It’s the cleanest place for miles, the bread is more than edible, and there’s this girl who works there…

Tell me a joke. A joke? My life is a joke. Have you heard the one about the pickpocket son-of-an-actress who went off to fight for a country not his own? He has camp followers in his bed every night but he never touches them because he’s paralyzed with kindness. He’s in love with a painting and he’s tolerably clever, but when he opens his mouth, only rubbish spills out. That’s funny, isn’t it?

What would you do if you woke up and found an elephant in your room? I would assume Harry got me drunk and dumped me in the menagerie when I was sleeping. Again.

What is your idea of perfect happiness? Alice Henshawe smiling at me over a pint of good dark beer.

What is the trait you most deplore in yourself? I’m useless at speaking. I couldn’t be more awkward if I tried. I don’t act until it’s too late, and then I go too far. I’m cool-tempered until I’m not. Few things set it off, to be fair, but I am violently opposed to men who hurt, take advantage of, or otherwise dishonor women. I cannot bring myself to regret that, but I’ve been known to, erm, react badly if I see it.

What do you most dislike about your appearance? I don’t give it much thought, but I used to be very short, and now I’m tall and gawky. I think I was an ordinary height for about a month when I was seventeen. Now I’m more than two yards tall and I feel like I’m all elbows. Would it have been too much to ask to be ordinary?

What is the quality you most like in a woman? Efficiency. That doesn’t sound very romantic, does it? It’s just that Alice has this way that she moves…she flits about like a fairy as she works, every movement quick, confident, and necessary. I used to watch her waiting tables and she was so fast, it was like time was different for her — her world was spinning faster while the rest of us were sleeping. She always seemed very sure of herself and her place in the world, unselfconscious and graceful, spinning between tables with plates in her hands, blowing hair out of her face. I’ve never seen a woman move like that. There’s so much life to her, but she’s quiet, so you have to watch her to see it.

What is your most treasured possession? (pulls a miniature out of his coat) Harry painted this portrait of Alice years ago, when she was perhaps thirteen. He dropped it in my bag before left for the Continent, and I didn’t find it until I’d been in Flanders a week. I’ve been grateful for the company all these years. It’s a piece of home I can carry with me. It’s been useful, as well. Alice has gone missing and I’ve been searching for her for weeks. Come to think of it, have you seen this girl? English, quite short?

HRthelongwayhome

Still curious? Here’s what the book is about…

After saving the life of the glamorous Marquise de Harfleur, painfully shy barmaid Alice Henshawe is employed as the lady’s companion and whisked away to Versailles. There, she catches King Louis’ eye and quickly becomes a court favorite as the muse for Charles Perrault’s Cinderella. The palace appears to be heaven itself, but there is danger hidden beneath the façade and Alice soon finds herself thrust into a world of intrigue, murder, and Satanism at the heart of the French court.

Having left his apprenticeship to serve King Charles as a spy, Jack Sharpe is given a mission that may just kill him. In the midst of the Franco-Dutch war, he is to investigate rumors of a poison plot by posing as a courtier, but he has a mission of his own. His childhood friend Alice Henshawe is missing and he will stop at nothing to see her safe. When he finds her in the company of the very people he is meant to be investigating, Jack begins to wonder if the sweet girl he grew up with has a dark side.

When a careless lie finds them accidentally married, Alice and Jack must rely on one another to survive the intrigues of the court. As old affection gives way to new passion, suspicion lingers. Can they trust each other, or is the real danger closer than they suspect?

“Really brilliant writing that’s so engaging with such endearing characters! I especially love the way Jack and Alice are both so devoted to each other! I was totally absorbed in this exciting and fascinating world Jessica Cale created from the very first paragraph to the last! I read this all in one sitting, staying awake late to finish, just had to!” – Romazing Reader

Virtue’s – er – Lady?

It’s Mad May, folks, and that means it’s all about antagonists, all month long. Today, we’re going back in time, to Restoration London, where highwaymen and harlots reigned supreme.

Okay, maybe they didn’t *technically* reign supreme, but for purposes of this blog, let’s assume. Because today, the author of this supreme series, Jessica Cale, has finagled a special interview with Meg Henshawe, a barmaid with a rather large chip on her shoulder, in the form of the heroine of book two in the Southwark Saga series, Virtue’s Lady.

In this series, the characters spend a great deal of time at The Rose & Crown, an inn run by the Henshawe family. Meg Henshawe is the eldest of the five sisters who work as barmaids there. Widely regarded as the most beautiful woman south of the river, Meg is as popular as she is volatile. As Mark Virtue’s on-again-off-again girlfriend, she is less than thrilled when Lady Jane arrives in Southwark…

I am sitting across a table from Meg Henshawe, feeling a little bit like I’m about to be eaten.

We’re at The Rose and Crown in Southwark, the inn she manages for her parents. The bar is closed for the night and her shift is over, so we have the whole space to ourselves. Meg is twenty-eight, an unmarried mother of three, and up until last week, Mark Virtue’s on-again-off-again girlfriend.

I can see why. Meg is easily the most beautiful and terrifying women I’ve ever seen up close. She’s tall and blonde with a lovely face and the kind of curves that should come with a warning. If she lived in the twenty-first century, she’d easily be on the cover of Sports Illustrated. She brings to mind Kate Upton if she was part barracuda. Her presence totally dominates the small space, and she’s glaring at me.

Meg: What?

Jess: Sorry, it’s just that you’re kind of alarming to look at. You’re beautiful.

Meg: (snorts) Piss off.

Jess: Do you mind if I ask you a few questions?

Meg: Haven’t got any say in it, have I? You brought me here. Ask and be damned.

Jess: Why don’t you like Jane?

Meg: Are you taking the piss? Jane? Jane?! Mincing about like she knows what it is to live in Southwark. This is my town, my inn, and Mark was mine. I’ve earned every last thing you see in here. I built my reputation, and you might not think much of it, but it’s mine. I looked after Mark for ten years and then Lady Jane Whatsit thinks she can roll out of her carriage one day and just take him from me? She has everything, and she could have any titled bloke she wants, and she’s got to go after mine? Why would I like her?

Jess: Ten years is a long time. Do you love Mark?

Meg: (deadpan) I love parts of him. What? I’ve got to shackle myself to one? Men are all alike. Mark’s better than most, and I do love him. He’s my best mate. Or was, until Jane. Now he’s lost his wits over her and I’m left to rot in this tip. Oh, I’ve got others, make no mistake, but one’s as good as the next. Only good for one thing, they are, and most of them aren’t even good for that.

Jess: What kind of man do you like?

Meg: Oh, no. I know who you are and what you’re doing. You think I’ll warm up to you and tell you all my secrets like my stupid little sister? You ought to write some sense into that one. You think I don’t know what you’re up to, but I bloody do. I’m good for more than waving my tits in blokes’ faces, whatever it is you might think. I’m a clever sort, cleverer than any one of them gives me credit for. You made me the villain of this piece, and what for? You break my nose and you think the prospect of some imaginary man is going to keep me from throwing you out of my bar? (crosses her arms) Bloody fine, I’ll play along. I like boxers. I like ‘em big and I like ‘em dark, if you must know. I am no wilting violet, me, and I want a man who can throw me around a bit, if you catch my meaning. Someone who fancies me for my brains, not just my tits, and somebody who sees that I’m only looking out for my family, and I’m not a bloody villain. Got one of those lying around, have you?

Jess: I might.

Meg: Might you? Why would you do that? You run my name through the mud in this rubbish, and then turn around and write me the perfect man? What are you going to do, give him to my sister?

Jess: Have you read Virtue’s Lady?

Meg: Can’t read much, can I?

Jess: Sorry. You might think you came across badly in this one, but I don’t think you did. You came out alright in the end. I really rather like you, Meg, and I’m not done with you yet. I’d like to properly get inside your head, and see what I can do about that perfect man.

Meg: (stares) You’re mad as a hatter.

Jess: Yes.

Meg: (smiles) I think I like you, too.

You can meet Meg Henshawe and all four of her sisters in Tyburn and Virtue’s Lady, out now!

From toiling for pennies to bare-knuckle boxing, a lady is prepared for every eventuality.

Lady Jane Ramsey is young, beautiful, and ruined.

After being rescued from her kidnapping by a handsome highwayman, she returns home only to find her marriage prospects drastically reduced. Her father expects her to marry the repulsive Lord Lewes, but Jane has other plans. All she can think about is her highwayman, and she is determined to find him again.

Mark Virtue is trying to go straight. After years of robbing coaches and surviving on his wits, he knows it’s time to hang up his pistol and become the carpenter he was trained to be. He busies himself with finding work for his neighbors and improving his corner of Southwark as he tries to forget the girl who haunts his dreams. As a carpenter struggling to stay in work in the aftermath of The Fire, he knows Jane is unfathomably far beyond his reach, and there’s no use wishing for the impossible.

When Jane turns up in Southwark, Mark is furious. She has no way of understanding just how much danger she has put them in by running away. In spite of his growing feelings for her, he knows that Southwark is no place for a lady. Jane must set aside her lessons to learn a new set of rules if she is to make a life for herself in the crime-ridden slum. She will fight for her freedom and her life if that’s what it takes to prove to Mark—and to herself—that there’s more to her than meets the eye.

~~~
The girl was beautiful.
She had him pinned to the bed. He was helpless beneath her hands. Her long fingers spanned his chest, tracing the line where the muscle dipped and gave way to shoulder. A hint of a smile played on her lips, more than just a little bit wicked. Kiss-crushed and sherry red, they were the sweetest thing he’d ever tasted.
“Like this?” She shifted back onto his hip bones.
She hovered above him like a conquering angel, all of the fearsome beauty of heaven in her laughing eyes, as grey and deadly as any steel. He could see the evidence of her ferocity in the iron poker that still projected from the door behind her head, a temptation as much as a warning.
“Getting there.” He grinned.
His hands rested on the curve of her waist, his rough, tanned skin a stark contrast to her smooth flesh, luminous and pale as the moon.
“More,” she moaned, rocking against him.
The bed slammed noisily against the wall, an insistent rapping that increased in frequency, strangely unconnected to the movements of her hips.
Somewhere in the distance, the sound of a saw.
Mark became aware of the bedclothes tangled around his legs. The stench of the river replaced the scent of her skin. She flickered as she bent over him with a sly smile, her hair falling around him like a curtain of copper silk. He was moments away from a bone-shattering orgasm. Just a little bit longer. She increased her pace, her breath quickening as she neared her peak. Her lips hovered above his, close enough to kiss, but somehow out of reach.
Her hips flickered under his hands and he heard the warble of a flock of geese.
“Jane,” he gasped, reaching out to grasp her as she disappeared, and finding only bed linen beneath his hand.
Appetizing April? Tanner Lyons Is Taking Over Anyway
Here’s the deal: My name is Tanner Lyons, and I’m the hero (which feels awkward to say, by the way) of the first Lightbearer book, Into the Light. The reason I’m taking over my author’s blog is because my book is featured on this thing called Book Bub today, and is crazy-ass discounted at 99 cents for the next few days. Tami made it clear that I’m supposed to talk about food, because apparently her blog is sub-titled Appetizing April this month, and every post is supposed to tie into food or eating.
Okay, so here’s my talk about food: I like to eat it. Preferably meat, although I’ll be honest and tell you that the head chef in the Lightbearer’ s coterie does make some pretty mean vegetable dishes. Still, I’d choose a hefty rare steak over pretty much anything else in the world.
Into the LightGot it? Good. Now that we’ve appeased my author, let’s get something straight: She is not practically giving my book away because she thinks I am worth less than Finn Hennigan, who is featured in the second book, Dawning of Light, or his brother Reid, who is featured in the third book, Light Beyond the Darkness, which is coming out on April 27. The truth is, you’re gonna love my story so much that you’re gonna feel the need to read their stories too. That’s why mine is discounted. Because I’m the pack master, after all.
Shit, I really am a pack master now, aren’t I? I’ve been avoiding this trap for ten years. dawningoflight_CoverThen some hot little Lightbearer who looks like she could never hold her own, yet is stronger than you and me and your entire family put together, comes along and flings my freaking plans over the nearest cliff. (And yes, that was a reference to the cliff in the Lightbearers’ coterie – and there is a point in the story when I want to throw myself over that damn cliff. Except I’m a shifter, so I would just instinctively shift into the shape of a bird and fly instead of crash into the beach at the bottom.)
Olivia Bennett. She’s the princess of the Lightbearers, the only offspring of the king and queen. Oh, did I forget to mention that I didn’t even believe these magical beings existed, until I saw Olivia curled up in the far corner of a prison cell in the basement of my asshole father’s mansion? Yeah, you read that right. My father, the pack master of the largest pack of shifters on the continent, built a freaking prison into the basement of his ridiculously pretentious mansion home. That’s how much of a bastard he is. No, wait, it gets better.
He believes that to kill a Lightbearer is to inherit her magic. Yep. My kind can shift from human form into pretty much any warm-blooded animal form that exists, so therefore we are part of the magical community. But that is the only magic we possess, and that just isn’t good enough for my psycho old man. (Are you sensing a theme here? I really hate the guy. With good reason, I promise.) Quentin Lyons wants the combined magic of shifters and Lightbearers, like that’s going to make him all powerful or some shit. Make him a god, I guess. The man’s seriously fucked up in the head.
LightBeyondDarkness_CoverAs I am his only legitimate offspring, that means I probably am – or will be, eventually – fucked up as well. Which means the last thing in this world I should be doing is rescuing some hapless Lightbearer and helping her get back to her secret, warded home, where all the rest of the Lightbearers live in blissful safety. Because you know what’s going to happen if Olivia and I spend too much time together, right?
I am in so much freaking trouble.
I Found A New Book Boyfriend!
On today’s Appetizing April blog, you get a character interview and an author interview! It is my pleasure to introduce Susan Behon, author of Fall For You, available now through Liquid Silver Books. First, let’s hear from Reed Sutton, the hero from Fall For You, who has a thing for the owner of the local bakery, Cookie Jar. Then we’ll hear from Susan, the creative force behind this fabulous book.
*
TT: Tell us about yourself. Do you consider yourself your author’s muse or bane of her existence?
RS: My name is Reed Sutton. Since coming home from the Navy, I’ve taken over management of my family’s construction company. I’d have to say I’m Susan Behon’s muse. She loves to write about me since I make an awesome book boyfriend. What? It’s true!
TT: Ha ha. I love an awesome book boyfriend. Especially one with a sense of humor. With that said, what will readers like the best about you?
RS: Readers will like my sense of romance and my drive to make Sophie Brandon mine. Did I mention I like to talk dirty during love scenes?
TT: Funny, sexy, determined, and talks dirty? Oh my, you are a true book boyfriend! Who is the lucky lady in your book?
RS: Sophie Brandon is in my sights as the future Mrs. Sutton. She runs a bakery called the Cookie Jar in our hometown of Madison Falls. I’d have to say that she has it all: Beauty, brains, and a heart of gold. Did I mention she’s also sexy as hell?
TT: Maybe you are both lucky, eh? Okay, you seem like you’d be up for a little naughty fun. Favorite place to seduce your partner?
RS: My favorite, so far, is the cab of my pickup truck. We, uh, got creative since we missed out on making out back in high school. Don’t tell Sophie I told you that.
TT: My lips are sealed. What do you wish Sophie understood about you?
RS: I wish Sophie would understand that she’s my top priority and no one will keep us apart.
TT: You sound determined. Another check in the positive book boyfriend category. Tell me this, if you could rewrite one scene in the book, what would it be? How would you rewrite it?
RS: I would rewrite the scene where Sophie and I get hot and bothered in the storeroom. I would cut out the part where my best friend, Ben, interrupts us.
TT: Oh no! Speaking of, any other embarrassing situations in your book?
RS: I mention Sophie’s decorative underwear in front of my family. I was in the hospital so no one can hold it against me.
TT: Yes, I think we can say you were under duress! Is there anything specific in this book of which you are particularly proud?
RS: Well, there is the interlude in the truck…
TT: And there’s that sense of humor again… All right, it’s time to wrap up this interview.  Would you like to add anything else?
RS: Read Fall For You and get to know me. You’ll love Sophie too.
fallforyou
Now, let’s learn about the fascinating lady who came up with Reed’s story!
AuthorPhotoSusanBehon
TT: Let’s start with the basics. Tell us a little about yourself.
SB: I graduated summa cum laude with a B. A. in English and a minor in Early Childhood Education. I put my career on pause while I enjoyed the glamorous life of being a stay at home mom. My high school sweetheart is also my husband of over 20 years. I also confess that I have a mad addiction to romance novels and Reese’s Cups.
TT: Now, tell us one incredibly strange or unique thing about you.
SB: I’m a green eyed, left handed, triplet. I was the first born and runt of the “litter.” 🙂
TT: Wow, that’s definitely unique! Okay, are you a pet person?
SB: At this time, I have geriatric dog named Max. He made a guest role in Fall For You as Sophie’s dog. Sophie’s Max was much smarter but I love my Max anyway.
TT: I understand. The newest addition to my family, Kaya, was featured in one of my books, too. How about seasons – winter or summer?
SB: I am a summer girl! I am usually freezing from October through April. I’m a big fan of heat and sunshine.
TT: Okay, one more: red or white?
SB: If we’re talking wine, I adore merlot and moscato. To be honest, I prefer the cheap Arbor Mist fruity flavors with the twist cap bottles to the real stuff.
TT: Hey, everybody has a favorite. I’m a big fan of wine, and my tastes vary from $4 bottles to far more than I have a right to spend on a bottle. Now, let’s get to the books. In which genre (s) do you write?
SB: I write contemporary romance.
TT: Is there anything specific that inspires you? How did you come up with the idea behind Fall For You?
SB: I get my ideas and inspiration from real life. I am an observer of human nature and I find that truth really is stranger than fiction. The idea for my last book is based on a real life dive behind a table of bread in an effort to avoid being seen at the grocery store. The rest is completely made up.
TT: How many books have you written?
SB: I have written two books and have a third in progress. The first book, Fall For You, Book One in the Madison Falls series, was released on March 2. The second book, More Than Words, is due out May 11, 2015.
Fall For you is a contemporary romance set in the small town of Madison Falls. Sophie Brandon and Reed Sutton heat up her bakery when they run into each other again.
The second book, More Than Words, is a continuation of the series. Ben Carrington and Tracy King get their turn at love.
TT: Readers love to know: how steamy is Fall For You?
SB: According to LSBooks, it’s rated a level 2 Spicy. The relationships are definitely consummated in detail, repeatedly. 🙂
TT: Excellent! Er… *clears throat* That was a little excited, eh? Is this book part of a series?
SB: This book is part of the Madison Falls Series. It is set in the small town of Madison Falls. Reed Sutton is back in town after 8 years in the service. The construction manager is home to stay and cookie baker, Sophie Brandon, is undeniably drawn to him.
Each book follows their friends and family as they get their chance at true love.
TT: Do you have a favorite excerpt you want to share here?
SB: Here’s a quick teaser:
Reality intruded when Sophie realized she was covered in powdered sugar, the heel of her shoe was jammed under a shelf, and Reed hadn’t let go of her yet. The bad news was that her chance at wowing him with her frilly green sundress had bit the dust. The good news, obviously, was that Reed hadn’t let go of her yet.
TT: Oh my, that’s great! Do you have a website? How about social media? How can your newest fans stalk you?
SB: I’m everywhere! 🙂 You can find me at:
TT: Now, before they get lost in Reed and Sophie’s story, ask my blog readers a question, which they can answer in the comments below.
SB: What is the sexiest quality/attribute that you look for in a romantic hero?
TT: I think I’ve already answered this question for myself, above. Can’t wait to read what others think. Okay, Susan, thank you for joining us today! Now, for the important question: How can we read your books?
Weddings, Crystals, and Stars Align
For my next Matrimonial March post, I want to introduce you to a book called Checkmate First Mate. The entire book is about a wedding – actually, it’s about the three weeks prior to a wedding. The maid-of-honor and mother-of-the-bride don’t have dates, until two sexy marine mechanics wash up on shore thanks to a boating incident.
What is this, you say? Here’s the blurb:
Reiki masters, crystals and astrologers… oh my!
Adam McGiver is a Coast Guard EMT, on injured reserve, and thinks all of the above are an interesting waste of time. The stars are for navigation on the seas.
 Melanie Cramer, third generation of psychics and healers, charts her life by the stars but prefers to spend her days with computers. She’s ready to embark on a global adventure dedicated to databases.
When Adam rescues Melanie from a boat that’s dead in the water, they are sure they’ve met before but soon hope they never meet again. These star-crossed lovers are desperate to outrun their fated attraction. But the universe, through their friends and family, tightens a romantic noose around them as wedding dates, before Melanie flies off to the other side of the world, and Adam sails away in the opposite direction.
Will they still be in love sometime next year? Or are they just two ships that passed in the night?
Here’s another fun teaser. Darla is fourteen years old and is interviewing her cousin Susan and her Uncle Dave, both characters from Checkmate First Mate, as part of a school project. Check out how Darla manages to bring out their personalities:
An interview with my cousin, Susan McGiver, and Susan’s father, Dave, as they are potential chaperones for my school trip next month – by Darla Williams.
Darla Williams: Thanks for agreeing to this interview and finally applying for passports. Your answers are so my friends and the trip coordinators get a more personal connection with you before we go.
Susan McGiver: We’ve applied but if and when we get passports is a variable. Going to Paris in a few weeks is not in my plan.
Darla: I’m using positive affirmation. I know neither of you ever go anywhere and at least we know you’re not trying to scam us for a free trip.
Dave McGiver: Darla, Darling, is this really a school requested interview or are you just having fun at our expense?
Darla: It’s both, Uncle Dave, okay? My first question is about how you two just attended a big formal wedding as escorts to primary players in the bridal party. This is the most exciting thing either of you have done my whole life. Yet, you didn’t know any of these people until three weeks ago.
Susan: Jake is a friend of the groom, and once we met Jake asked me to be his wedding date. Nothing unusual there. Dad escorting the mother-of-the-bride was a surprise.
Dave: Not really. Ruth is a friend of your grandmother and she’s been coming here for a dinner party each week for the past few months. It was two weeks to the event and Ruth realized she didn’t have a date yet and asked me to do the honors as her escort.
Darla: Then what was I hearing about the maid-of-honor?
Dave: That’s where the story gets fun, and her date was your uncle Adam.
Susan: Here’s what happened, Jake was going to escort the maid-of-honor even though she’s tiny and he’s six-four. They were boating with the bride and groom and had problems so needed a tow. Adam got that call and went to the rescue. That’s when the maid-of-honor met him. I took Adam out for dinner as thanks for fixing my car and the coincidence was the others had just met for dinner at the same time and place, like fate, and we made it a party of six. It was love-at-first-sight for me and Jake, which it was for Adam and the maid-of-honor though those two are still in denial. So when Ruth asked Dave to escort her two days later, and he said yes, she also invited Adam to the wedding so Dave would know someone at the party. As soon as the bride learned Adam was going to the wedding, she assigned him to be the maid-of-honor’s wedding date. That meant Jake was free to ask me. Of course I said yes.
Darla: Okay, now it makes more sense because Adam does all kinds of adventures all the time. But neither of you have dated anyone my whole life. What’s up with that?
Dave: It’s because our lives are interesting enough.
Darla: Uncle Dave, all you do is work on boats, and Susan you take pictures of them.
Susan: Darla, you just turned fourteen. Any adventures you’ve had so far are because your parents made them happen. You have a passport because they do.
Darla: And now both of you are dating these great people who travel the world and speak other languages. Will you two now leave the marina for at least a vacation someday?
Dave: I escorted Ruth to her daughter’s wedding. That doesn’t mean we are dating.
Darla: Why is that? Ruth is great and she speaks fluent French. Can you talk her into being a chaperone for my trip? Even if you aren’t dating? I could really use someone local to have French conversations with these next weeks.
Dave: Your grandma is the one to arrange future contact with Ruth. I’m sure she’d love to talk French with you, and she lives near your new house.
Darla: All right, I’ll talk to grandma. So Susan, how much longer will you be dating Jake? Mom said you never had a guy around longer than a month.
Susan: Then we’ve got at least another week together.
Undercover Heat – Real or Pretend?
Today, fellow author and friend, Patricia D. Eddy, did an interview with Quinn and Kyra from Undercover Heat, over on her blog. I liked the interview so much, I figured I’d bring it over here to my blog, so you all can read it too.
Enjoy!
 ~~~~

Undercover Heat_CoverOn today’s blog, I decided to feature the hero from Tami Lund’s latest contemporary romance, Undercover Heat. His name is Quinn Daniels, and he’s an FBI agent, based out of the Detroit regional office. He’s had some hard knocks in his life – an abusive father and a mother who never stood up for her son or herself – but according to his boss, Nico, those past experiences have helped shape him into one of the finest agents he’s ever known.

It’s a rare treat to secure an interview with even one FBI agent, so imagine my surprise when Kyra Sanders, another agent currently working out of the Detroit office, shows up by Quinn’s side. “It’s my case we’re working on,” she says with a sideways glance at the handsome man standing next to her.

Quinn had asked me to meet him at a high-end steakhouse, suggesting we could have a drink and appetizers while we talked. Who was I to complain, especially when he insisted on picking up the tab?

“There she is,” Quinn says abruptly, and I swing my head around, wondering whom he’s talking about. “Don’t look,” he chides me. I whip my head back to face him and Kyra, embarrassed by my lack of FBI etiquette.

“What do you expect her to do, when you say something like, ‘There she is’?” Kyra asks him, hands on hips, a glare in her eyes.

“Are you going to be this snippy for the entire case?” Quinn shoots back. “Because living with a bitchy woman is not my idea of a good time. I’ve never lived with any woman, except my mother, but I sure as hell wouldn’t choose to live with one who harps on me all the damn time.”

“It’s a case, Quinn. We’re going undercover. It isn’t real.” Kyra says all of this through clenched teeth, and I have the impression she has had to point it out multiple times already.

“I’m not an idiot. I understand the difference between real and make believe. I—”

“Do you?”

I watch Quinn’s face flush a dull red. “That kiss was for the benefit of our perp,” he says evenly. “And it worked, didn’t it? She came over and talked to us, which is exactly what we wanted.”

“That was not a pretend kiss,” Kyra says, still speaking through clenched teeth. I’m beginning to worry her jaw is going to lock.

“I can’t help it that I’m a great kisser, and that you enjoy my kisses.”

Kyra sputters indignantly for a few moments before saying, “You enjoyed it too.”

Quinn shrugs. “I did. We can pretend kiss anytime you want. We can even pretend sleep together, if you want.”

“How is that going to help us close this case?”

“It won’t. But it’ll help with this case of blue balls I’ve had ever since pretend kissing you.”

“That’s it. I’m out of here.” Kyra turns to leave, but Quinn stops her with a hand on her arm.

“She’s coming over,” he murmurs so low I am not sure I hear him correctly.

“Who?” I ask, finally joining the conversation. This is supposed to be an interview, but I’ve been so busy watching the sparks fly between these two, I’ve completely forgotten to do my job.

“Our perp,” Kyra says. “The reason we are doing this undercover assignment. She’s been running Ponzi schemes for, we believe, ten years, possibly more. I almost nailed her last year in Dallas, but she managed to get away at the eleventh hour.”

“I’m still not convinced she didn’t have inside information,” Quinn says.

The look on Kyra’s face is interesting. She looks as if she is in pain. I want to ask about it, but the pained look shifts into a fake smile, and her gaze is locked on something behind my back. I turn around to see what she is looking at and come face to, er, giant boobs with a woman wearing stiletto heels, a slinky red dress, and a bleached blond bouffant hairdo. I lift my gaze to see her smile, showing off blindingly white teeth between ruby red lips. Her gaze, I notice, is latched onto Quinn. A quick look in Kyra’s direction confirms that she isn’t happy about this. Interesting, given they are supposed to be pretending to be together. Her acting skills are worthy of an Oscar. If she’s acting.

I realize Quinn is introducing me to the boobs, I mean, the woman in red. I shake her hand and say, “Nice to meet you, Ms. Bianca.” She offers me a vague smile and returns her attention to Quinn.

Kyra is so mad I can practically see the steam coming out of her ears. But when Whitney Bianca lifts her hand and cups his bicep, Quinn lifts his own arm and drapes it across Kyra’s shoulders. She immediately tenses – as does Whitney, I notice. Is this some sort of bizarre love triangle? I don’t recall anything in the notes I received about Quinn having a relationship with the perp they are trying to set up so they can arrest her and shut down her Ponzi schemes permanently.

I watch Whitney while Quinn nuzzles Kyra’s hair. Kyra tries to push him away, and Whitney looks as if she wants to grab Kyra by the hair, give her cement shoes, and toss her into the nearest body of water. I wonder if it is not that she and Quinn have a relationship as much as she wants there to be one. Which is funny to me, because it sure seems like Quinn and Kyra have something going on. Undercover or not, this couple gives off some serious heat.

Whitney Bianca makes an excuse and leaves, and Kyra and Quinn wait for less than five minutes and follow her. I am left standing in the lobby of the restaurant, no notes and no interview in hand. The only thing I am certain of is that if someone asked me to place a bet on whether or not Kyra and Quinn are pretending to be attracted to each other, I would win that wager. Hands down.

Garrett James from LOVE and LIBATIONS Talks Love and Starting Over

Today I’d like to introduce you to Love and Libations, a contemporary holiday romance by author Patricia D. Eddy.

Garrett James was discharged from the army with a prosthetic leg and a Purple HeaLoveLibationsTeaser3rt. He found a new purpose behind the bar and has big dreams that involve his own restaurant and someone to share it with. Too bad most of the women he dates either balk at the idea of dating an amputee or can’t stand the fact that he works every night.

Lilah McKinney doesn’t have dreams. Her abusive boyfriend has systematically destroyed them, even though he’s never laid a hand on her in anger. A chance meeting with Garrett reminds her what it felt like to want something for herself. When her boyfriend snaps and nearly kills her, Garrett steps in, but he can’t stay. Lilah needs to reclaim her dreams on her own.

Fate brings them back together almost a year later, a few weeks before Valentine’s Day. Will Lilah share her dreams with Garrett? Or will her past come between them once again?

WARNING: Love and Libations contains scenes of domestic violence and abuse that may be disturbing to sensitive readers.

Garrett James himself is here to talk a little bit about his story, his feelings about Lilah, and the kind of man he wants to be.

“Garrett, thanks for stopping by today.”

“You’re welcome, Tami. It’s my day off. Lilah’s at her writin’ group and I’ve just come from the gym.”

“Your hair does look a little…damn. I mean, damp. Damp. That’s it.”

Garrett runs a hand through his tousled dark hair and grins. The left corner of his mouth twitches a little higher and wow. I get a peek of ink at his wrist, the petal of a rose at his open collar.

“So tell me a little bit about yourself. You’re a bartender?”

“I own a bar in Pioneer Square called Libations. Craft cocktails, premium microbrews and local wine, and I’ve got a great chef who designed the menu. It’s done well.”

His chest puffs out a bit and he straightens. “And it’s the reason I found Lilah again.”

“Oh, can you tell me a little bit about that? About her?”

“She’s my everythin’. She had some trouble. Came to a head about a year ago. Her ex was—is—an abusive son of a bitch and tried to kill her.”

“Oh God. She’s okay, though?”

“She’s doin’ well now. I didn’t think she’d come back to me. I lost her after the…incident. Couldn’t find her, call her. Nothin’. It about killed me. But that year we spent apart helped her. We’d only just met when that asswipe beat the crap out of her and shoved her in front of a moving car. I think we were on our way to becomin’ friends. It wasn’t until I found her in my bar a year later that it turned into something’ more.”

“How much more?”

Garrett grins again, heat turning his cheeks bright red over the stubble that darkens his jaw. “That’s between us, darlin’.”

Darlin’. Oh God. That accent. Where is he from? And can I go there?

“Do you have any family?”

“My ma’ and pop live in Hawaii. They retired there after I got my shit together. Been there almost six years now. I’m takin’ Lilah to meet them in a few months. No brothers or sisters.”

So no others like him back home. Shoot. “After you ‘got your shit together.’ What does that mean?”

“Tami, I lost most of my right leg in Iraq. It messed me up for a good bit of time. I’ve got a kick ass prosthetic now,” he raps on his thigh, the sharp sound of resin echoing. “But I refused to even think about gettin’ one for a couple of years after it happened. Lived with my folks, angry all the time. Took a buddy to pull me out of it.”

How’d that happen?”

Garrett rolls up his sleeve to show me a tattoo. It’s a bolt of lightning. Be Brave. Be Strong. The words are blazed on his skin, branded, and he runs his fingers over them lightly. “That tattoo saved my life.”

“How many do you have?”

“A lot. And no. You can’t see ‘em all. They’re only for me. And Lilah.”

“You have a tattoo for Lilah?”

“Yep.” He smirks, his hand resting lightly over his heart.

Damn. He really isn’t going to show me.

“Last question, then. I promised I wouldn’t keep you long. Why was it important to tell your story—Lilah’s story—to Patricia?”

“There are too many women out there, men too, but mostly women, who are trapped in abusive relationships and they don’t even realize it. Abuse isn’t all physical. Lilah didn’t even know she was bein’ abused until that shitshow had taken everythin’ from her. Her confidence, her spark, everythin’. When she finally understood, it was almost impossible for her to leave. Her story’s the important one here. Mine…well, I want folks to know that you can be loved with scars, with aLoveLibations past that sometimes sneaks up on you. With this.” He rubs his leg again. “But this book is all about Lilah. She survived somethin’ awful and she came out stronger on the other side of it. She’s a miracle. My miracle.”

Swoon. I can see why Patricia wanted to tell his story. And Lilah’s.

“Thank you, Garrett, for your time today. Lilah’s a lucky woman.”

“I’m the lucky one, Tami. Possibly the luckiest man in the world.”

Curious about the author of Love and Libations?

Patricia Eddy_Head ShotPatricia D. Eddy can’t stop writing. Not that she’s tried. Her characters won’t let her.

She fuels her writing with copious amounts of caffeine-she lives in Seattle, after all-and rewards herself with good Scotch and red wine.

In between writing, editing, and mentoring other authors, she runs around lakes, reads late into the night, and is terribly addicted to Doctor Who and Sherlock. She has a thing for quirky British men and isn’t ashamed to admit it.

Her quirky-but-not-British husband never gives her grief for working long hours or occasionally talking to herself when she has disagreements with her characters, for which she is very thankful.

Meet Thrand from Ashlynn Pearce’s New Release, FUEL

I was given the privilege of reading Fuel, the latest fun and sexy release by Ashlynn Pearce, and the first in the Dirtslap series. This is a five-star read. But don’t assume I know what I’m talking about. Take a look at this interview with Thrand. He’s a drummer, living in Nashville, initially trying to make a living as a studio drummer, until a friend suggests he should start his own band. That band is called Dirtslap, and they’re freaking amazing. A little country, a little rock, a lot sexy.

Fuel is Thrand and Cassie’s story, and Ashlynn Pearce, the author, managed to catch him during a brief moment of downtime – with the entire band, I might add – and she shared the interview with me. I am, in turn, sharing it with you, because we all deserve to read about a sexy drummer and his obsession with a spirited girl from his past. Take it away, Ashlynn…

~~~
I’d interviewed Cassie a few weeks ago, so now I thought it might be Thrand’s turn. He said I could meet him at his place, because they were going to have band practice.
I’d learned my lesson from Cassie and wasn’t wearing slacks. I’d opted for shorts and a casual top—and since I was in Nashville, short cowboy boots.
I pulled up to the address. Two trucks and two Harleys are parked in the drive.
Great…the entire band is here. I ring the doorbell, my nerves getting the better of me. Sure, I know these guys, (I created them) but still, I have no idea what to expect.
The door is yanked open and the guy’s warm brown eyes sparkle as he flashes me a cocky grin.
“We got a groupie,” he yells to the guys inside.
 Uh, no. Just here to interview Thrand. You must be Ryan.”
“Thrand? Why the hell would you interview him? You should interview me.” He waggles his eyebrows and opens the door wider so I can step inside.
“Cause you’re a punk,” another guy says. “Don’t make us put you in a corner. And she’s interviewing me cause I started this band. Not you.”
 Ryan is cute but Thrand captures my attention. Tall, maybe 6 foot, with intense gray-blue eyes. The short hair, clipped close to his head, and barely there scruff. He’s wearing a tank that exposes the tattooed sleeve on his left arm. Wide shoulders with a clear definition of muscle in his arms, he makes my mouth a little dry. Or maybe wet. “Actually, I’m interviewing you for your story. Not really because of the band. And sorry if I’m late.”
“You’re not late. They’re early. And for my story, huh?” He rubs the back of his neck, looking slightly uncomfortable.
I can’t seem to not stare at the way he moves. Smooth and fluid, it’s a tad nerve-wracking. Then I catch a glimpse of the insanely tall guy leaning against the bar and I lose all track of thought. Looking like he belongs on a metal stage, he wears all black, with a lip ring, gauges, and sports black mussed up spiky hair. He smirks when he catches me staring and I about swallow my tongue when I spot dimples.
“Yeah, I’m Ethan.”
 It’s all his says but that Georgian drawl sends my mind spiraling into the gutter. Or up to heaven. I’m not really sure.
“So what do you want to know?” Thrand asks as he walks over and sits on his drum stool and adjusts a few things.
 It forces my attention back to the task at hand. Except then I notice a guy hunched over a bass, with hair hanging in his face. He doesn’t even look at me. That must be Zak. I clear my throat and focus on Thrand, who’s looking at me expectantly. “Sorry, I didn’t know everyone would be here. So I guess I’ll ask you what I asked Cassie.”
“You interviewed Cas?” His brows draw together and he frowns.
“Yes, I did. She didn’t really have patience for the interview.”
He chuckles. “Cause she doesn’t have any at all.”
“No. She didn’t seem to. First question, what is your idea of perfect happiness?”
Ryan snorts and gyrates his hips as he calls out, “A happy ending. It’s what all guys want.”
Ethan cuffs him on the back of the head. “I don’t think that’s what she meant.”
Heat creeps up my neck as I try to ignore Ryan’s crude remark.
Thrand glares at Ryan then says, “I’d say getting out of Oklahoma. Everything after that is gravy.”
I scribble it down, thinking Cassie said about the same thing. “Your greatest fear?”
The room is eerily quiet and it seems the entire band want to know the answer to that one. Thrand is obviously thinking about it as he leans forward, elbows on his knees.
“Never being able to make music again.” His words are measured, his eyes hooded.
I get the impression he’s not being totally honest here. And Cassie said something similar, except her answer had to do with taking pictures. “What quality do you like best in a woman?”
“Big tits,” Ryan says and jumps up, prancing around the room and acting like he’s cupping boobs.
 I can’t help but laugh as I turn back to Thrand who is just shaking his head with an exasperated look on his face.
“You know there is more in life than tits and beer, right?”
Ryan looks shocked then rolls his eyes.
“One day a girl is going to come along and knock you right on your ass,” Thrand states.
“Naw. Watching it happen to you has been scary enough.”
“He has a point,” Ethan says. “That girl has you running in circles.”
Thrand’s jaw works. “There’s nothing going on there. She’s just a friend.”
“Sure. I’ll believe that when you convince me Santa is real,” Ryan takes a swig of his beer as he falls onto the couch.
I don’t have to ask about who they are talking about. I met Cassie. She’s a whirlwind.
“You have any other questions?” Thrand asks me and twirls a drumstick in his hand.
“Last one. What do you regard as the lowest depths of misery?”
He instantly pales and his eyes darken. “Lady, that’s a real damn personal question and we have band practice.”
With that, I’m ushered out the door without a chance to say anything else. I walk slowly to my car as I hear the bang and crash of drums and the riffs of guitar. I’m thinking that didn’t go well at all and I’d wished they’d would have let me stay and watch DirtSlap in action.
Once upon a time…You ain’t gonna believe this sh**!
(I always wanted to start a bio like that!) But seriously–scrap that, I’m not serious, but I do love to write. Create characters. Give them hope that there is something better around the corner. It’s my passion. I live and breathe stories. When I’m not arguing with the characters in my head (yes, I do that, you can ask my hubby who thinks I’m nuts btw), I’m taking care of said hubby, my two kids and a melee of furbabies. I’m Okie born and bred and, yes, we get a lot of twisters and, no, there aren’t any teepees around that I’ve seen.
Stop by my website and follow me around to see what I’m up to next!
DirtSlap is coming…ya’ll ready to get a lil dirty, right? 😉
Mountain Gorillas, Armed Rebels, Love, and a Character Interview
I am pleased to welcome one of the main characters from Kim Hotzon’s recent new release, Hands Full of Ashes, to today’s blog. Olivia Daniels has a great many obstacles to overcome in this action-packed, heart-wrenching drama. Before we get into Olivia’s interview, here’s what the book is about:
Olivia promises to fulfill her dying husband’s wish – to scatter his ashes around the world. After journeying to Africa, Olivia plans to follow through on this promise while working as a volunteer at an orphanage.
On a weekend trip to see the famed mountain gorillas, Olivia attempts an escape from an ambush by armed rebels. During her recovery, she falls in love with the man who saved her.
As her new love blossoms, Olivia is unaware that the director of the orphanage has fallen in love with her. His attempt to find her coincides with an event that will change Olivia’s world forever.
This interview, like the book, has some powerful messages. Let’s get to it. Hello, Olivia. Thank you for joining us today. It looks like your author has put you into some incredibly intriguing (and dangerous!) situations. In fact, it doesn’t sound like there is a dull moment in the entire book. Tell us, what do you think readers will like best about you, in this book?
Olivia: They will be happy to know that although I have suffered in life, I persevered. I was unwilling to give up or give in, even in the toughest moments.
Tami’s Thoughts: Is there anything readers may not appreciate about your character?
Olivia: They may not understand why I left Roger and why I didn’t tell him my secret.
TT: Roger? Is he your significant other? Are you married?
Olivia: I am now happily married. Hint: he has a heart of gold.
TT: Okay, let’s have a little naughty fun. Favorite place to seduce your partner?
Olivia: Outdoors. Africa has the biggest sky and it is there that it is the most beautiful and memorable.
TT: What do you wish Roger understood about you?
Olivia: My continued need for independence – my choices and decisions affect our future as well.
TT: If you could rewrite one scene in the book, what would it be? How would you rewrite?
Olivia: I would save my friend. Or I would handle things differently with Roger.
TT: Has your author ever put you into an embarrassing situation? How did you handle it?
Olivia: I was trying to be so helpful with the children at the orphanage but it turned out they knew more about survival than I did. The memory of the water pump stands out. I wanted the children to view me as their saviour, but in the end I learned that we saved each other.
TT: Is there anything specific in this book of which you are particularly proud?
Olivia: My survival, my marriage, and my child.
TT: Would you like to add anything else?
Olivia: I hope someday that readers will find the courage to make their own journeys and find the love they deserve. The sky is the limit.
